Inscribed by the author to the children of Sinclair’s friend and associate Gaylord Wilshire: "To Myra, Mary II, & Logan with love, Upton Sinclair." Sinclair's condemnation of alcohol, told through the illnesses and deaths of various of his friends and family from drink. Wilshire, a billboard magnate turned socialist activist, was a close friend and associate of Sinclair’s who tragically ended his own life after business reverses. Indeed, after many years of underwriting Socialism in general and Sinclair in particular, Wilshire lost a fortune for Sinclair attempting to run a goldmine on socialist principles.
