The American Boy's Book of Sports and Games: A Repository of In-and-Out-Door Amusements for Boys and Youth. Illustrated with over Six Hundred Engravings

New York: Dick and Fitzgerald, (1864).

Price: $1,000.00

Hardcover. First edition. Small octavo. 600pp. Illustrated in both black and white and with four color chromolithographic plates. Green cloth stamped and decorated in gilt, red, and black. Small chips at the edges of a few leaves, one signature a little sprung, moderate wear on the boards, a good copy. A compendium of sports for boys with illustrations of baseball, town ball, and many other sports. The baseball plate (facing page 82) is widely considered the first color plate illustration of a baseball game to appear in a book. The other three plates depict fencing, gymnastics, and skating (with what appears to be a boy wielding a hockey stick).
