Freeport, N.Y. Submitted by JMG Books, 1996.
Unbound. First edition. 64 printed quarto leaves printed rectos only with a blank yellow leaf at the end. Likely scanned or photocopied from a single original. The original was apparently on high-quality textured paper, with various irregularities on the copied paper appearing as ink dots on every page. Held together with a binder clip at the top. One corner slightly bumped, still fine.
Detailed book proposal for Boyd's definitive biography of Zora Neale Hurston, the proposal written almost entirely by the Atlanta journalist Boyd, much of it in the first person (except for a brief section of "Endorsements" of the author, which includes Leon Forrest, and another three-page section on marketing and competition, presumably supplied by her agents). Circulated seven years before the actual publication of the book (London: Virago 2003; New York: Scribners 2004). Aside from what is already mentioned, the manuscript provides an overview and approach to the biography, with a chapter-by-chapter outline, and an author biography. The published book was very well received, and given the Southern Book Award and the American Library Association’s Notable Book Award. We can find no record of any copies of this proposal offered for sale, and *OCLC* locates no copies.
