Hardcover. First American edition. Translated by Delia Goetz. Illustrated by Juan Oliver. Small octavo. 176pp. Faint sunning at the spine ends, near fine in very good or better dust jacket with shallow chipping and a small hole on the spine. A nice copy of this wartime-printed YA novel about a young indigenous leader who resisted Spanish conquerors in 16th century Chile. Alegría was also an important Chilean poet and literary critic; he translated "Howl" into Spanish not long after its publication, and is the author of the iconic Chilean poem "¡Vive Chile Mierda!" Exiled from Chile, he was a vociferous critic of the Pinochet regime.
