Hardcover. First edition. Two volumes. Gilt-stamped red cloth. Gutter before title pages cracked, pencil underlining and marginalia throughout both volumes (from poet Daniel Hoffman's collection), volume two has one-inch chip and tear in margin of page 39 not affecting text, cloth lightly soiled and rubbed, still a very good set. Considered to be one of Howells' best works set in New York City highlighting social injustices of the times.
