Bound in contemporary quarter calf and marbled paper over boards, gilt spine, marbled endpapers. Tiny ink stamp on back free endpaper. The boards and spine are rubbed, modest wear at the joints and edges of the boards, moderate scattered foxing, overall very good. Contains the first appearance of Edgar Allen Poe’s *Marginalia* (embracing critical notices of Carlyle, Dr. Cheever, Mr. Street, Dr. Bush, &c.). Also included are two poems and one biographical sketch by John G. Whittier, and the first thirteen chapters of *Papers of an Old Dartmoor Prisoner* edited by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The magazine is noted for its articles on the abolition of slavery, women’s rights, New England transcendentalism and socialist movements. A well-preserved copy in the original boards.
