Tolson graduated with honors from Lincoln University, attended Columbia University, and taught at Langston University in Langston Oklahoma (where he also served three terms as mayor, from 1954 to 1960). In 1947, Liberian President Tubman named Tolson Liberia's Poet Laureate. In 1953 Tolson completed a major epic poem in honor of that nation's centennial, *Libretto for the Republic of Liberia.* He was also the basis for the central character in the movie *The Great Debaters* (2007), directed by and starring Denzel Washington.
