African-American Episcopal priest Crummell was born in New York City, graduated from Queen's College, Cambridge, and was active in the Abolitionist movement. Following missionary service in Liberia, he became the rector of St. Luke's Episcopalian Church in Washington, in 1873. Uncommon.
