Letters of Photographer E.O. Hoppe to Theater Critic Oliver Sayler

(1923-26).

Price: $3,500.00

A collection of nine letters written by the German-born British photographer E.O. Hoppe to the American theater critic and writer Oliver Sayler. The collection also includes five related letters to Sayler from Hoppe’s secretary, M.E. Chickall, and three retained carbon copies of Sayler’s letters to Chickall and Hoppe. The letters concern Hoppe’s photographs of the famous English aristocrat and author Lady Diana Cooper, his photographic studies of Karl Vollmöller’s play *The Miracle*, and his trip to the United States in preparation for his book, *Romantic America* (published in 1927). The collection includes four ALS and five TLS by Hoppe and five TLS by Chickall, most of them on Hoppe’s printed letterhead. All 14 letters are near fine overall, with light folds and a few short tears.

Born in Munich in 1878, Hoppe established his London photographic studio in 1907, and he was the founding member of the London Salon of Photography in 1910. He soon became one of the most in demand photographers of the early 20th Century. The letters are detailed and rich in content: other photographic projects mentioned by Hoppe include photographing Dr. Reinhardt at his Salzburg, Leopoldskron estate, and photographing the cast of *The Miracle*. A detailed list of the letters, with excerpts, is available upon request.
