Between the Covers

Unbound. Carte-de-visite photographic portrait of "The Late George Eliot", after an earlier albumen print. Image measures 2.25" x 3.25" on a slightly larger mount. Photographer's printed caption in lower margin of mount states: "The Late George Eliot, Stereoscopic copy..." and is imprinted on verso: "London Stereoscopic Company Limited." The photographic image has tiny soil spot in upper background, else in near fine condition. This posthumous issue is not among the images of George Eliot (1819-1880) held by The National Portrait Gallery of England, which does cite a similar 1870's issue of the photograph. A professional studio portrait of an elderly George Eliot in three-quarter profile shown from the waist up, arms crossed, with one hand at her chin, wearing a multi-striped dress.
