Hardcover. Original printed document by the American Colonization Society. Single folio leaf measuring 9.75" x 15.5" folded once, printed on one page, with conjugate blank leaf. Folded for mailing, a few short closed tears at folds, remnant of wax seal, else a very good copy of a fragile document. Printed by the Office of the American Colonization Society presumably in a very small number for board members only. The American Colonization Society was founded in 1817, with the goal of returning freed African-Americans to Africa. In 1822, the society established the colony of Liberia, and by 1867, they had sent more than 13,000 emigrants there. Jeremiah Day was the president of Yale from 1817 to 1846, and served as Vice President of the American Colonization Society from 1831 to 1832.
The printed announcement, to "Sir," announces the date and time of the next meeting of the "Board of Managers," and the election of a Treasurer, "in place of Mr. [Gerrit] Smith, who recently resigned the office." Signed in type: "P. R. Fendall, Assistant Secretary." Addressed on verso, in contemporary ink holograph, to "Jeremiah Day, D. D., Yale College, New Haven, Ct.," with contemporary ink postal cancel: "City of Washington, Jun. 12."
