Hardcover. First edition, variant and presumed second issue with 1891 copyright date, and with 1892 date on the title page, and with frontispiece portrait of the author. Octavo. Brown cloth stamped in gold and black. Owner's early ink name on front flyleaf, front hinge is slightly started, else a fine copy, the binding is very fresh and bright, with very slight rubbing on spine. Long thought to have been written by an African-American author, recent scholarship has concluded that the author is not African-American. An attractive copy.
