Text in Muskhogean (Hymns) and English. 24mo. 220, [2]pp. Publisher’s decorative brown cloth stamped in blind, gilt spine. Samuel Worcester Robertson’s copy (the son William Schenck Robertson), with his owner’s name in ink on the front free endpaper: “S.W. Robertson, Tullahassee, M.N.” [Muskogee (Creek) Nation, Oklahoma]. The front joint is partially split (with an early thin lacquer mend on the joint and spine), shallow loss at head and tail of spine, a few light splits along back joint, corner tips are worn, else very good with a tiny nick and slight stain on the fore-edge of a few leaves at the front. An uncommon edition, with a few emendations in pencil, presumably by Samuel Robertson, the son of Ann Eliza and William Robertson. The Robertsons, in collaboration with David Winslett, a Creek, published the first Creek-English bilingual newspaper: *Our Monthly* (1870-75), and Samuel served as the newspaper’s printer. The Robertsons and Winslett are considered “the primary agents by which the Creek language was placed into printed and oral religious educational materials for native speakers.” *OCLC* locates only one copy of the 1873 edition.
