Penhally

New York: Scribners, 1931.

Price: $450.00

Hardcover. First edition. A sound and intact, but well worn, about good copy lacking the dustwrapper. The primary charm of this copy of Caroline Gordon's first book is that it belonged to the author's brother, Morris Meriwether Gordon, with his ownership Signature dated in the year of publication. Morris Gordon has used the blank portions of the last few pages to pen some French and English sacred poetry. In addition, Morris supplied a brown paper jacket, which he titled on the spine: "Penhally by Caroline 1931." Morris remained close to Caroline throughout their lives and was unfailingly supportive of her during her difficult divorce from Allen Tate and in the last years of her life.
