[Broadside]: Luster's Sur Glo Hormone Enriched Hair Treatment

circa 1978.

Price: $450.00

Unbound. Broadside. Measuring 15" x 19". Slight edgewear else near fine. An advertising broadside with an attached cardboard stand used as a display piece for Luster's Sur Glo hair serum featuring a beautiful African-American model looking over her shoulder as tame, wavy hair falls down her back. The history of products aimed at Black women to obtain what was deemed "good hair" has its roots in the slave trade and early American racism. For decades inventions such as the "hot comb," various tonics, "relaxers," and tinctures were created to "smooth" hair that was seen as unruly and coarse to destructive effects. Many of these chemicals burned skin, damaged hair, and some, including Luster, have been sighted in cancer studies.
