Dubin's Lives

New York: Farrar Straus Giroux, (1979).

Price: $300.00

Hardcover. First edition, third state with last line of text present on page 231. Heavily foxed on the foredge, a little sunning on the boards, and a tiny nick on the front fly, very good in very good dustwrapper with several small tears. Inscribed by Malamud to Chet Garrison (a close friend and colleague of Malamud's) and his wife Louise: "For Louise & Chet In appreciation of a long friendship, Bern." The Garrisons were also the dedicatees of a 1967 omnibus edition of Malamud's work, *The Malamud Reader*. There are several very light pencil notes or marks in the text, probably in Chet Garrison's hand.

Chester A. Garrison became friends with Malamud soon after Garrison joined the English Department at Oregon State College (now University) in 1954 where they bonded over being Easterners (Malamud from New York and Garrison from Jersey City) and their mutual interest in Thomas Hardy. Malamud's son Paul interviewed Garrison about their relationship for the book *The Magic Worlds of Bernard Malamud* (2001). A very nice association copy.

Collecting tips:

His 1952 novel The Natural is very eagerly sought after, by both literature and baseball collectors, it came in three different color bindings - red, blue, and gray, with dealers invariably asserting the priority of whatever color copy they happen to have in hand. All of our experience would tend to indicate that there is no obvious priority - frankly we'll note the color of the binding in our descriptions, but we pretty much value them equally. The English edition (1963) is interesting as it offers a glossary for baseball-challanged Britishers that is not in the American edition. The first edition of The Assistant needs to have reviews of The Natural on the rear panel. Fine copies are very uncommon. his 1958 collection The Magic Barrel and Other Stories comes in two issues with no established priority, but collectors seem to prefer the issue from the Jewish Publication Society over the issue from Farrar Straus and Cudahy.
