The Marble Faun

Boston: The Four Seas Company, 1924.

Sold

Hardcover. First edition. Preface by Phil Stone. Octavo. 51,[1]pp. Mottled green paper-covered boards, with title labels mounted on the spine and front cover. Slight wear, else a fresh, very near fine copy lacking the dustwrapper. Housed in a custom cloth chemise and slipcase with printed paper label.

A very nice copy of Faulkner's first book, a volume his close friend Phil Stone described as "poems of youth and a simple heart... It is seldom that much can be truthfully said for a first book beyond that it shows promise. And I think these poems show promise." The production of *The Marble Faun* was underwritten by Stone, with the entire edition estimated at roughly 500 copies. Of these, it is estimated that less than 100 were probably sold (cf.Peterson, Boozer), a substantial number of these now reside in institutional collections. *Peterson* A1a.
