Between the Covers

Unbound. Albumen baseball team photograph. Image size 8¾" x 7½" on a larger thick card mount. Horizontal crack in the mount not affecting the image has been repaired on the verso with similarly old cardboard, some foxing mostly visible on the sky in the background, else very good. Captioned on the mat in a later (ball point pen) hand: "Stoneham Team, Mass. Edward C. Campbell. Edward C. Campbell i[s] last one on first row." The photo pictures 10 men, nine of them are in bib or shield-front uniforms, several with a large “S” on the front, two of the men are holding bats. The lone man without a uniformed man wears a long coat and a bowler hat, and was presumably a manager or coach. Undated but the shield-front uniforms are mostly reminiscent of uniforms from the 1870s. Stoneham is nine miles north of Boston. A relatively large early baseball image.
