Quarter cloth and printed papercovered boards. Paper on the corners of the boards rubbed away, front hinge restored, and faint stains on the front board, a sound very good copy. Penciled gift inscription to a member of the prominent DuPont family: "For Mary B. DuPont with love & best wishes on her birthday from Aunt Sophie. Louviers, September 23rd, 1887." Sophie was the wife of Civil War hero, Rear Admiral Samuel Francis DuPont. The author was the first high-caste Brahman woman to come to the United States where she graduated from the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1886 becoming the first Hindu woman to receive the Degree of Doctor of Medicine.
