Report of the Decision of the Supreme Court of the United States... in the Case of Dred Scott versus John F.A. Sandford

Washington: Cornelius Wendell, Printer, 1857.

Price: $3,000.00

Softcover. First edition. Octavo. 239pp. Printed buff wrappers. Small tears and a little chipping at the bottom of the front joint, but a handsome and sound, else near fine copy. Scott was a slave, who with his wife, lived in the free state of Illinois and returned to the slave state of Missouri with his owners. Scott sued for his freedom and initially won, but that decision was overturned 7-2 in what is considered one of the worst decisions in Supreme Court history. The ensuing controversy further ignited the debate over slavery and directly influenced the nation's path towards the Civil War. Rebound copies occasionally appear, wrappered copies are much less common. An extremely important American document. *Howes* S-218; *Grolier American* #66; *Sabin* 33240.
