Unbound. Two page Autograph Letter Signed, using two sides of a bifolium of Mourning stationary from Boston dated 24 January 1889. Old folds from mailing, tender and with a bit of splitting at the folds, near very good. Holmes politely declines an invitation to visit Georgia, where his father had preached: "If a wish could carry me to the meeting of the 12th of February and another wish bring me back alive and well I should certainly be with you. I heard a great deal about Georgia when I was a boy on my father's knee, and the interest with which he always spoke of it - of Midway and its people - of Savannah and his friends there has left a strong impression on my memory." Abiel Holmes, the poet's father, had been a pastor in Midway, Georgia.
