Softcover. Oblong quarto measuring 11.5" x 7". String tied black leather flexible boards with “photographs” embossed in gilt. Contains 264 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 1.5" x 1" and 8.5" x 6.5" with some captions. Bumped spine ends and corners with some light wear on the leather, about near fine with near fine lightly faded photographs.
A young man’s photo album from before, during, and after World War II, circa 1930s-1950s. Newspaper and magazine cut outs are used to caption certain photographs, “This album is a real monument.” A page is dedicated to a young woman captioned, “come where my love lies,” with pictures of the woman posing and smiling. In other photographs the couple can be seen affectionately holding each other in their arms. Many of the photographs also show the man’s friends, in group photographs. There are real photograph postcards of family picnics as well with some regular family photographs including beach trips with pictures of swimsuits from the time frame. Several pictures of the man’s family poodles, cats, and later pictures of pet birds are included as he really loved animals. There are pictures from Paris featuring the Eiffel tower and during the man’s visit he takes pictures of past war barracks and old military paraphernalia. This may have sparked that man’s interest to join the army during World War II. During his time in the war there are pictures of him with his infantry at base and training, one of which is captioned, “That’s just my way of forgetting about you.” There is one picture that shows dozens of beds outside covered in snow, completely empty. After returning home from war he has some later hunting photographs one of which shows a deer fully strung up and about to be skinned. He also can be seen working in a small goods store behind the counter with pictures of some of the food items and home goods he sold. His life after is mostly focused on his wife with a photograph of the two posed close together with her captioned, “attempted to kiss him,” and, “take your time.” A wedding photo of his wife in her dress is shown with a later picture of the couple together captioned, “And so, to bed.” Some of the photographs feature accidental double exposures of the couple so that it looks like multiple couples are pictured in some of the shots.
