A photo album kept by Warren H. Boyer of State College, Pennsylvania while working at Adventure Island in Wisconsin between 1924 to 1930. The early pages of the album include maps and pages from a pamphlet describing the camp. The first page explains that “Adventure Island is a stretch of wild, rugged land lying in Green Bay.” It continues “Adventure Island Camp is definitely committed to the small camp ideal. Its enrollment is limited to forty boys.” The camp was “founded in 1922 by Charles A. Kinner” and serves as a place for boys to experience “healthy living.” From there Boyer includes photos from the years he was employed by the camp. The photos show boys fishing, boating, swimming, and other camp activities. Adventure Island Camp also boasted a Viking ship for the boys to use and it is seen throughout the album as one of the main features of the camp. A photo showing the boys on the water reads, “headed towards the island comes the 'Serpent of the Sea,' with her sturdy crew of Viking oarsmen, each with shield and weapons ready for action against the Pirates.” Boyer captioned most of the album extensively explaining the events at the camp. One of the photos shows young boys in kayaks, which were built by the boys, which reads, “some of the pirates enjoying their kayaks.” Many of the photos show the two factions of the camp, pirates and Vikings, in costume fighting on the shores of the camp.

An extensive look at a boy’s summer camp over numerous years.
