Contains 254 black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 0.5” x 0.5” and 10” x 6.5” with captions. Tiny chips and tears on the corners edges thus very good with fine photographs.
A photo album with aesthetically pleasing photographs shot by a young woman, Valeria D. Foot, during her time in college and after from 1914 through 1922. The photos are detailed and well shot featuring interiors of houses, fashion, group photos, travel pictures, and candids. The album belongs to Valeria D. Foot, a young woman who attended Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts during late 1910s who was originally from New Rochelle, New York. The first part of the album shows the campus of Smith College as well as the class of women at the college. Each class photo includes the names of each woman on the verso or to the side of the photograph. The pictures are captioned with dates, locations, and short descriptions, one of which shows the women wearing shorter dresses captioned, “Dress shortage epidemic,” and another, “Influenza epidemic,” captioned below a picture of the women wearing face masks. Included are pictures of the women spending time together around the campus and posing for group photos. One of the later photos has the women dressed as flowers performing in a cabaret group, Foot is dressed as a poppy flower. Several photos are dedicated to pictures of Ivy Day, a ceremony of ivy being planted to commemorate academic achievement, at the college.
After her graduation, Foot travels to Canada and Europe visiting the Canadian Rockies, Bow Falls, Banff, Oxford, Cornwall, Essex, and Sussex. There are landscape pictures showing the mountains and lakes in Canada and the cityscape and country of England. These landscape photos also include photographs pasted together to make a full panoramic view of the landscape. Foot’s extended family is shown in these pictures as well as the family dogs. Several dogs are pictured throughout the photo album, usually being hugged by Foot. There are pictures of pigs and a small monkey in the album. Foot frequently visits her friends that live in New Hampshire, Maine, and New York. She visits Washington D.C. and takes pictures of the Treasury, Capital, and Pan American building. She takes pictures of the boats she travels on as well as a Hydroplane she would fly with H. M. Jones.
A charming woman’s photo album with well shot photographs from her time in college and traveling during the mid-1910s through to the early 1920s.
