Photograph depicting members of the women’s aid society of the first agricultural community established by Jewish immigrants in Argentina in 1891. These predominantly Russian immigrants, fleeing pogroms, established Colonia Mauricio in Carlos Casares. The political and cultural role of women in this wave of immigration has only recently started to enter the historical record, see, for example, Sandra McGee Deutsch, Crossing Borders, Claiming a Nation (2010).
