Des Moines, Iowa: (circa late 1930s - early 1940s).
Price: $300.00
Unbound. 5.5" x 3.75" Vintage gelatin silver photograph on post card back. Corners a little rounded, else near fine. The post card shows a middle-aged white man in a suit and tie sitting on the steps of a wood-framed house surrounded by twenty or so young African-American children. A young black woman sits behind him and four women stand on the porch above the steps. Three of those women appear to be mixed race, and the fourth is an older white woman. A United States flag is prominently displayed next to the steps. The reverse of the card has a pencil annotation that reads, “unwanted children Des Moines, Iowa”. The orphanage is not identified, but presumably some modest research would reveal the location. We have heard from someone who purports to have a relative in the picture, and that one of the young students "is my brother-in-law with his pre-school class at a community center", which as of now we can not confirm.
