Document Signed by Future Connecticut Governor Jonathan Trumbull. 1747

Lebanon, Connecticut: 4 January 1747/8.

Price: $1,200.00

Unbound. Laid paper. Approximately 7.5" x 12.25". Old folds, one small tear and one small chip affecting no text, remnant of wax seal, very good. An indenture made on advice of Trumbull and on behalf of the town selectmen binding Prudence Lamb, a poor female child as maid servant to James Mackall and his wife until she turns 18. In exchange MacKall and his wife were required to provide her "...suitable meat, drink, washing, lodging & wearing apparel..." as well as to "...teach her to read and spin if she be capable of learning of it..." The document seems to not be in Trumbull's hand, but he has Signed and docketed it on the verso. Further research indicates the Prudence Lamb married Elijah Taylor in Lebanon in 1757. Trumbull, at the time a successful merchant, would later become a Royal Governor of Connecticut and was the only such to support the rebelling Colonies. He remained as Governor for the entirety of the Revolution. An early legal document bearing his signature.
