Between the Covers

Hardcover. Oblong small quarto. Measuring 12" x 8.5". Black textured cloth over stiff paper boards with "Photo Album" stamped in silver on the front board. Contains 147 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1.5" x 2" and 3" x 5", with captions. Very good album with chips, tears, and spotting on the front board with very good photographs with some edgewear.

A photo album kept by the Chiodi family of Baltimore between 1934 and 1946. The photographs are not strictly in chronological order but show the family working, at their family home, and on vacation through the mid-1930s and early 1940s. The album begins with a trip to Jamestown, North Dakota, where they had lived before relocating to Baltimore, with photos of family friends on their front porch, children in their Sunday best, and workers on the Northern Pacific Railroad. Following this there are photos of a sheep ranch, a farm in Edmond, North Dakota, and Jamestown State Hospital. Friends and family are seen throughout the album in a variety of portraits, candids, and photo strips. They visited upstate New York and Niagara Falls, went camping and hiking, and enjoyed leisurely boating. As the war began the photos start showing more men in uniform including a Navy seaman and a man, Ernest Chiodi, in an Army uniform who is later mentioned in a newspaper clipping as dying in Germany in 1944. “A member of Company I 395th Infantry, 99th Division, ‘Ernie’ proved himself one of the highest caliber servicemen.”
