Between the Covers

Hardcover. Oblong small quarto measuring 11" x 8". String-tied brown leather album with a zipper close and "Camp Eagle" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 43 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 3" x 4" and 5.5" x 7" without captions. Also included are a broadside, *A Falcon in the Field*, a newspaper clipping, and a few handwritten pages. A very good album with some wear, rubbing, and some removed photographs with near fine photographs.

A photo album from a boys' camp, Camp Eagle, in 1960. The album shows photos of boys and their counselors enjoying the wilderness, canoeing, and in their cabins. Most of the photos are large and show bunks with animal skins, deer heads hanging from the wall, and the boys working outside. The boys also participated in fishing trips, seen here with a group of boys holding a string of fish. Perhaps of most interest, the boys were taught falconry. Seven of the photos show the practice of falconry at the camp, from boys being taught how to hold the birds to the birds at rest beautifully captured in the photo. The compiler of the album had an avid interest in the sport and included in the album is a small broadside advertisement for ordering *A Falcon in the Field* by J.G. Mavrogordato with a synopsis on the information that could be found in the treatise. A 1963 newspaper clipping from South Dakota is also featured here with a headline which reads, “Falconers Enjoy National Meet Here,” which discusses a falconry contest in the state. One section of the paper reads, “Good weather and attendance add to success. A highly successful convention of the North American Falconers Association came to a close here Sunday when many of the 76 falconers registered for the event took advantage of the hawking parties to fly their birds once more before departing for their homes all over the United States and Canada.”
