Emirau Island, Papua, New Guinea: 17th Seebee. Camp Tietjens, 1945.

Price: $275.00

Softcover. Volume VII, No. VIII. Four folio leaves mimeographed on both sides. [8]pp. Illustrated. Small strip cut from edge of the first leaf affecting no text, old horizontal fold, but sound and very good. Attractive mimeographed newsletter from a Naval unit in the Pacific with good art work. Articles include mention of the beer ration being increased (four cans a week-per-man), The Battalion resuming a seven-day work week, biographical sketches of some of the men, a crossword puzzle and other games, and a variety of comics, both commercial *Male Call* by Milton Caniff and *Blondie* by Chic Young, and some apparently specific to the unit. The entire final page is an especially impressive dancing pin-up girl (reminiscent of Carmen Miranda) drinking rum and Coca Cola, by amateur Joe Connolly. Mimeographed newsletters of this sort were printed for the troops in profusion, but they were seldom preserved. This is a particularly pleasing example of the genre. *OCLC* locates no copies, not surprisingly.
