Printed and hand-colored lithograph (12 x 18 cm.) mounted within a gold border on a black paper sheet (16 x 23 cm.). A sweeping, panoramic view of the Lunatic Asylum at Staunton, Virginia, published by the great German-born lithographer Carl Magnus. The view, printed and hand-colored in multiple colors, dates from not long after the buildings, designed by Baltimore architect William Small, were modified in 1847 by Thomas Blackburn in a distinct Jeffersonian style.
