Collection of Copies 1 and Copies A of all of his Lord John Press Books

Northridge, California: Lord John Press, 1977-2000.

Price: $38,000.00

The complete collection of 22 of John Updike's Lord John Press limited edition books from the collection of the publisher Herb Yellin. Each of the 11 titles are represented by two copies; the copy number "1" or copy letter "A" of the smallest limitation; and the copy number "1" of the larger limitation; the lone exception is Mites, a miniature book, which is lacking the smaller limited but instead includes a Presentation Copy facetiously Signed "Norman Mailer" by Updike. Each is a hard cover edition and is in a slipcase when called for. Fine, very minor exceptions noted. This collection of limited editions includes all the lowest limitations from one of the most respected fine presses and the most frequent of Updike's fine press collaborators. Lord John founder and publisher Herb Yellin (1935-2014) named his press after noting that the list of authors he wanted to publish all shared the same first name, chief among them John Updike, his favorite. Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection (with the author himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed - including a nearly complete collection of foreign editions). "[John] liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country," recalls Yellin in a 2010 interview on the occasion of Updike's passing.A unique collection of John Updike limited editions that would be impossible to reproduce.
