[Original Manuscript]: Gray Steel: J.C. Smuts, A Study in Arrogance

Price: $3,500.00

Unbound. Typed manuscript. Approximately 390 hand-numbered carbon leaves typed rectos only with scattered hand-corrections by the author, and some cut and pasted leaves. Punch holes in left margins and tied into sections with ribbons. A few pages pulled through, overall very good or better. Note at the end: "E Copy for U.S.A. ... 10,000 more to come after MS." Although complete as it stands, the last 45 pages of the published book are lacking here. Armstrong was a British officer who wrote several biographies, including those of Mustafa Kamal of Turkey and King Ibn Saud of Saudi Arabia. Smuts was a South African-born British Commonwealth leader. He served as prime minister of the Union of South Africa. He led the Boer Commandos in the Second Boer War, and later led the armies of South Africa against Germany in World War I. He became a field marshal in the British Army in 1941, and served in the Imperial War Cabinet under Winston Churchill. He was the only person to sign both of the peace treaties ending the First and Second World Wars. This manuscript was possibly used in the preparation of the American or a later edition. Originally published by Arthur Barker in London in 1937. Accompanied by a later printing of the book.
