Between the Covers

Hardcover. Oblong album. Measuring 13" x 10". Flexible tapia cloth covered boards. Contains approximately 198 images varying in size from 2½" x 3½" to 6" x 4". Housed in a clamshell case. Very good with covers worn and detached at the spine but present; interior pages slightly loose. All images are very clear and most are captioned. The album was assembled by a young woman teaching at the Paia School on the island of Maui. There are a number of photographs of this woman and her companions as well as images of the school, teachers, and students. It appears that this album documents her travels around the different islands of Hawaii between 1916 and 1917. In it are some typical images one might expect including beautiful scenery and historic monuments. However, there are also many especially interesting photos which illustrate a deep sense of Hawaiian culture. These includes surfers in Waikiki, fine images of the Royal Hawaiian and Moana Hotels, an old mill in Koolau, a Japanese wrestling match, the Iao Valley shortly after the 1916 flood, Rainbow Falls near Hilo, a nice view of the lava pit of Kilauea volcano, a laborer plowing a rice field with a horse drawn plow, laborers working on a pineapple plantation, and much more. A large and well-illustrated and visually arresting documentation of Hawaii in the first part of the 20th Century.
