The Residual Years: Poems 1934 - 1948 The Pre-Catholic Poetry of Brother Antoninus

(New York): New Directions, (1968).

Price: $450.00

Softcover. First edition, wrappered issue. Trade paperback. Modest wear, about near fine. All the verse of the celebrated San Francisco poet written before his crisis of religious faith. Although unmarked, poet and critic Karl Shapiro's copy. Laid in is a brief note on Committee for Arts & Lectures letterhead to faculty announcing a reading by Everson with the headline "Students in your Classes may be interested in this poetry reading." Also with Shapiro's Typescript introduction of Everson, using one side of one page and part of the verso with a few hand corrections in the margins. Creases on the corners, very good. In the introduction, Shapiro mentions Everson's forthcoming books, refers to his work *Archetype West* as "a lucid and imaginative study of the creative writer as Western archetype," he references the Beat and Hippie movements, and concludes by mentioning the other readings by Everson he has attended including "the famous one on December 7, 1969, the second most memorable Pearl Harbor Day in my recollection."
