[Photo Album]: New England and Dartmouth College

New England.

Price: $750.00

Softcover. Oblong octavo. Flexible brown green boards with "Photographs" and "Souvenir of Atlantic City" in gilt. Near fine. A collection of 89 sepia toned photos measuring 4.75”x 2.75”and 11 sepia toned pictorial postcards measuring 3.5” to 5.5” as well as two road maps of Kentucky. The photo album is from an unnamed female student’s graduation from Dartmouth College and the subsequent roadtrip she and her family through New England. The road trip begins in Cape Cod, with photographs of Massachusetts National Cemetery included, with close ups of headstone engravings and scenic views, before the family travel onwards to Cadillac Mountain in Maine, Glen Ellis Falls in New England, and the birthplace of President John Coolidge. The postcards show views of various buildings that make up her alma mater, with each building’s title printed on the bottom edge. Also included are two maps, the first ‘A Scenic and Historic Road Map’ published by Kentucky Progress Commission in 1932. It includes black and white photographs of significant land marks and views on route, as well as a coloured road map of Kentucky on the reverse. The second map also has black and white photographs on one side, with a larger and more detailed map on the reverse, with the route the family chose picked out in blue pencil. An interesting collection given it provides a direct insight into how people conducted a road trip and how they perceived such landmarks as Echo Lake in their time, but it is made all the more significant by depicting a woman graduating college – a concept that was still new at the time.
