Ex-library with bookplate on the front pastedowns, paper shelf label on the back free endpapers, and small number stamp on the bottom margin of the first text page in each volume, else no other markings. Early bookseller's ticket: Peter Doyle, Philadelphia. The calf is worn and peeling away from the boards, else very good: the interior text pages and engraved plates are clean and bright. Julius Pollux's important Greek thesaurus, the oldest encyclopedia of literary, cultural and historiographic learning from Hellenistic Greece. Pollux was professor of rhetoric at Athens and one of the most important intellectuals of the later 2nd Century.
