Autograph Letter Signed. One manuscript page on a quarto sheet, folded, dated "12mo" [December] 17, 1838. To Caleb Newbold, Esq., President of the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal Company. Partially split along two horizontal folds, one tiny circular tear, else good or better. Thomas Cope was a prominent Quaker merchant and leading political figure in Philadelphia. Founder of the Cope family shipping business, he served on the Philadelphia City Council and Pennsylvania legislature, and on the first board of Haverford College. As President of Philadelphia's Board of Trade, he played a leading role in the ongoing construction of the Delaware and Chesapeake Canal. In this letter to Newbold, he promises the Board's support for improvements to the harbor at Delaware City.
