Old auction description of the letter accompanies the letter. Pickering was a philologist and naturalist who accompanied Capt. Wilkes on the United States Exploring Expedition of 1838-1842 to the South Seas. Pickering received a medical degree from Harvard University in 1823 and practiced medicine in Philadelphia, as well as being a librarian and curator Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences. From 1842-43, Pickering curated the collection from the Wilkes Expedition, which was housed at the Patent Office in Washington DC.
