America’s Radio Wizard: 3 Ford Card Operated by Radio

Ephrata, Pennsylvania: 1934.

Price: $225.00

Unbound. Broadsheet. Measuring 9" x 11.75". Very good or better with two light folds, a couple tiny tears and a few subtle spots at the edge. A broadsheet sponsored by a local Ford dealer touting a performance by Maurice J. Francill, “America’s Radio Wizard,” who traveled the country in the 1920s and 1930s giving exhibitions of his radio control technology on cars, trains, boats, and various industrial machinery. It reads: "See the lights flash, horn sounded, motor started and cards guide without drivers, entirely by radio." Born outside of Marion, Ohio, in 1896, Francill studied science as a teenage and later became an electrician as the age of radio technology blossomed. During the Depression he took his knowledge and developed this traveling exhibition displaying the wonders of radio control to the masses in fair grounds, exhibition halls, and theaters around the country eventually being featured in advertisements for Philico radios. An wonderful example of early leading edge technology used as entertainment and Depression-era entrepreneurial spirit.
