Move Poetry: William Talen, Lewis Macadams, Jim Carroll

San Francisco: 1978.

Price: $450.00

Unbound. First edition. Measuring 11 x 17". Offset printed on recto only. Small holes from removed staples, a tiny tear on the bottom edge and some staining else near fine. The original poster for this reading by the three poets at legendary San Francisco punk club Mabuhay Gardens. Illustrated with a photograph of the poets by Phil Schaafsma. Jim Carroll had only recently come out of his seclusion at Bolinas to play with Patti Smith in San Diego earlier in 1978. In the current picture he is wearing a shirt that says Bolinas - perhaps a reference to his recent exile. He began playing music with other Bolinas musicians who would eventually form the Jim Carroll band. The Move Poetry series, curated by William Talen, gave Carroll his first venue to perform with his new band. Kevin Opstedal, a poet who worked with Carroll, notes that it was at a Move Poetry performance in this year that made their first performance, as Jim Carroll and the Amsterdams - but we haven't been able to determine if it was at this reading or not that they performed. Nonetheless, a rare flyer from an important period and venue in Jim Carroll's career, and a nice tie between the poetry scene and the punk scenes at the time in San Francisco.
