The author's first book, Inscribed by him to a noted African-American critic and editor: "To Phil: We shall abide the Sphinx. David Henderson. Augusto 1968." Henderson was a founding member of the Society of Umbra, editor of the literary *Umbra* magazine, one of the first literary magazines published by and for black writers, and a founding member of The Black Arts Movement.
