Hardcover. First edition. 16mo. Contemporary quarter leather and printed papercovered boards. Illustrated throughout with wood-engravings. Ownership signature of William Swan Plumer, a noted clergyman and author, in neat ink on the front board and front pastedown. A worn copy, lacking the title page and last page of the index, else good with light scattered pencil doodles, and a contemporary child's occasional hand-coloring to some of the wood-engraved illustrations. The recipient of four honorary doctorates, Plumer was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in 1838 and 1871, and a prolific author and commentator. His signature on the front free endpaper is dated 1870, from when he was Professor of theology at Columbia Theological Seminary in South Carolina. Davidson is best known today for his *Living Writers of the South*, also first published in 1869 along with his *School History of South Carolina*. He was a professor of Greek at Mount Zion college, president of Carolina high-school, and served in the civil war as adjutant of infantry in Jackson's corps of Lee's army. After the war he moved to New York City, where he was literary editor of the “Evening Post,” and the American correspondent of the London “Standard.” Scarce in the trade.
