Art and Politics in the 1930s: Modernism, Marxism, Americanism

New York: Midmarch Arts Press, (1999).

Price: $250.00

Softcover. First edition. Trade paperback original. Octavo. 317, [1]pp. Glossy illustrated wrappers. Fine. From the library of the artists Ben Shahn and Bernarda Bryson Shahn, with an estate label designed by their son, Jonathan Shahn. Inscribed by Platt: "To Bernarda with great thanks, Susan Noyes Pratt." After prefacing the printed acknowledgements, Noyes first mentions: "Most helpful of them have been Bernarda Bryson Shahn, who has responded graciously to all my requests for interviews and information and Lucienne Bloch..." On the next leaf, Bernarda has penned a memorial to Lucienne Bloch, who died around publication of the book. She has also used the inside rear cover to pen a little essay about the term "the usable past" as it refers to artists. Both Ben and Bernarda Shan are mentioned (and pictured) extensively in the book. Presumably, as good a copy as you would want.
