Hardcover. Second edition. Contemporary half polished calf and marbled papercovered boards. Original extra-gilt spine laid down. Small chip on front fly, edgewear to the corners of the boards, a good copy. A pseudo-history of the life of Charlemagne and Roland, a 12th century chronicle of legendary material about Charlemagne's alleged conquest of Spain supposedly written by Charlemagne's contemporary Turpin, the Archbishop of Reims, but found out as a forgery in the Renaissance. The work was extremely popular, and served as a major source of material on Charlemagne in chronicles, fiction and iconography throughout Medieval Europe. Matthew Arnold's copy with his bookplate on the front pastedown.
