(London): (F.C. and J. Rivington; Cochrane & Pickersgill), 1820;1831.
Hardcover. A scarce and unusual two volume set (octavo, 17 cm.) being volumes 30 and 31 of "The British novelists," published by F.C. and J. Rivington in 1820, with the frontispiece and four etched plates by George Cruikshank published by Cochrane and Pickersgill in 1831 bound in. It lacks the title pages of both publishers, with Cochrane and Pickersgill's 1831 imprint on the frontispiece portrait of Smollett. It thus consists of the 1820 letterpress text and a complete set of inserted plates from the first edition illustrated by Cruikshank. This makes a happy marriage: Volume 1: , xviii, 246 pp.; leaves of plates (including the frontispiece portrait) ; Volume 2: , 238 pp.; leaves of plates. Very good in full contemporary red morocco, gold tooled borders and edges, gilt spine titles and decorations, all edges gilt; with some darkening to the spines, wear and rubbing to the joints, the spine ends, and to the board edges and corners. The text pages are clean and tight, with age-toning and foxing to the endpapers, and scattered small stains and light foxing throughout; and with light browning to one of the plates.
