The Eye Opener for Americans; or, Questions put to Women in the Confessional Box. A literal translation of Rome’s Theology, by P.A. Seguin, Ex-Priest

[Lake Mills, Wisconsin: Published for the Author, 1891].

Softcover. Small octavo. Original stapled pictorial wrappers. 26pp. Illustrated. Lightly soiled wrappers, else very good. Ex-priest Seguin recanted his vows and went on a one-man (?) crusade to persecute the Catholic Church. In this “episode” he denounces “A Whoremaster – The Greatest of All in the Romish Menagery” which is a screed against St. Alphonsus Liguori and accuses this saint (and those of his ilk) of all kinds of sexual improprieties against women in the confessional box. The front wrapper has an incongruous cut of a large all-seeing eye which is above a cut of a priest molesting a hapless Catholic woman who was merely trying to expatiate upon her daily sins. A few other such lewd and crude images are to be seen. *OCLC* locates three copies of this edition, none in Wisconsin. One copy each of two other editions noted. This copy with an inserted printed sheet recognizing, in 1915, Seguin’s 1891 copyright.
