The Galley Sail Review: Volume 2, Number 5

San Francisco: Galley Sail Publications, 1959 / 1960.

Price: $250.00

Softcover. First edition. Small octavo. 40pp. Very good or better in toned stiff wrappers, slightly rubbed with some wear along the spine and a few scattered spots. Signed or Initialed by William Carlos Williams, Cid Corman, Philip Lamantia, Max Finstein, as well as several other poets we could not definitively identify. It's additionally signed by Betty Boop, John Paul Jones and Napoleon, though we have reason to believe these are not genuine given that one is a cartoon character and the other two had been dead for more than 100 years at the time of this issue's publication. These were done fictitiously by one of the contributors. Nevertheless an interesting and possible unique copy of this poetry magazine.

Biography

American poet who succeeded in making the ordinary appear extraordinary through the clarity and discreteness of his imagery. Williams, trained as a pediatrician, devoted himself to a lifetime of poetry writing and medical practice in his hometown. In Al Que Quiere! (1917), roughly translated "To Him Who Wants It," his style is distinctly his own. Characteristic poems that express Williams' fresh, direct impression of the sensuous world are the frequently anthologized "Lighthearted William" and "By the Road to the Contagious Hospital" and "The Red Wheelbarrow," both of the latter published in Spring and All (1923). - Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia of Literaturemore
