Unbound. Small partly printed complimentary card. Measuring 4.5" x 2". Fine. "For the staff at Xmas, if you will be so good as to distribute it. GBS. Ayot St. Lawrence, Walyn. 18/12/23." With original envelope addressed by Shaw. Envelope has been roughly opened. Presumably a check was enclosed, but the staff apparently saw fit not to preserve it for posterity.

Gibbs, (per Wikipedia) Shaw wanted to refuse his Nobel Prize outright because he had no desire for public honors. However, he accepted the prize at his wife Charlotte Payne-Townshend's behest: she considered it a tribute to Ireland. He did reject the monetary award, requesting instead that it be used to finance translation of Swedish books to English.more
