Hayes was the American marathoner who won the controversial gold medal in the 1908 Olympics in Rome when Italian Dorando Pietri made a wrong turn entering the stadium, collapsed, and was helped over the finish line by spectators. After his running career was over, Hayes became an athletic trainer. Tunney's signature is faded, Hayes' is dark.
